Fan spotlight: Shelly Niimi

Fan spotlight: Shelly Niimi Shelly Niimi is one of Sasha’s most supportive fans. I have had the opportunity to meet and speak with her at Fiesta Lakers, where her “I’m a Vujachick” t-shirt caught my attention, as well as ESPN 710 Day. Because of her background in design, she has even dreamed of a “Sasha Wear” collection inspired by none other than Sasha himself.

How long have you been a fan?

I’ve been following Sasha as a fan for about two years now.

What was it about Sasha that caught your attention?

Initially, like for a lot of people, it was the headband. However, I also noticed him because I heard he had the experience of playing in Italy. I went to school in Italy and it is like my second home. So people and things related to Italy always grab my attention.

What are some of your favorite things about Sasha?

Besides his great ability to shoot, I really enjoy his showmanship. He’s not afraid to express himself, he interacts with the crowd, and I think he has a great sense of humor. I think he adds a whole new dimension of entertainment for basketball fans.

Do you have a favorite Sasha moment or game?

There are so many, but I would have to say my favorite is when I first met him in person at the AT&T signing. I really appreciated how he made so much of an effort to make everyone’s experience of meeting him a great one. He was extremely personable and was genuinely happy to meet everyone.

You have been seen at Sasha and Lakers events with creative Sasha t-shirts you designed yourself. Can you tell me about the inspiration behind these t-shirts?

I think there are many interesting facets of Sasha’s persona and one of them is his great sense of style. Although my background is in design, I’ve never designed clothes before, but Sasha’s sense of style somehow inspires me to think about design and clothes. Sometimes I also think about what Sasha would like to wear and it sounds kind of funny, but I get ideas for a “Sasha Wear” collection. Another thing that inspires me is the whole Vujachick movement. I think there is a lot of positive and refreshing energy there that is really cute.

Anything else about your Sasha and Lakers fandom you would like to share?

During the playoffs time, I would sometimes go for “Laker walks” with my dog Kobe. I would wear my Sasha jersey and Kobe would wear his Kobe jersey flag cape.

If you could say one thing to Sasha, what would it be?

I think it is so wonderful that you have reached your ultimate childhood dream at such an early age and stage of your life. Also, I think it is a gift of yours that you were able to touch and inspire so many people along the way. I hope now you can dream even higher and beyond your wildest imagination and continue to inspire even more people along your journey.
